The initial symptoms of onychomycosis may include nail discoloration, thickening of the nail in response to infection, onycholysis, pain and/or discomfort. Discoloration is most often the first symptom in which the nail may become yellow-white, brown, orange, or black depending on the microorganism responsible. The nail may become brittle and break easily. Pain and discomfort sometimes result from inflammation and pressure from the thickened nail plate. [1]

There are distinct classifications pf onychomycosis based on nail plate pattern changes; distal and lateral subungual (DLSO), superficial, endonyx, proximal subungual, mixed, totally dystrophic, and secondary onychomycosis. Of these, DLSO is the most common, affecting males and females in equal measure. DLSO typically progresses from the lateral or distal undersurface of the nail plate towards the proximal nail fold.
